Molecular sieve is an important catalyst and adsorbent in the field of petrochemical and coal chemical industry, and its performance is closely related to the crystal structure. Molecular sieves are usually submicron or even nanocrystalline, and their structure cannot be characterized by traditional X-ray single crystal diffraction.
In the preliminary work, the team of Guo Peng and Liu Zhongmin focused on advanced electron crystallography (including three-dimensional electron diffraction and high-resolution imaging technology) and X-ray powder crystallography methods, and carried out structural analysis of porous materials such as industrial catalysts. It provides a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of high-performance industrial catalysts/adsorbents.
In this work, the researchers used advanced three-dimensional electron diffraction technology to directly analyze the crystal structure of a new type of pure silica zeolite molecular sieve containing ordered silicon hydroxyl groups from the atomic level. The regularly distributed silicon hydroxyl groups are closely related to the unique elliptical eight-membered ring orifice structure. Subsequently, by adjusting the calcination conditions, the researchers effectively removed the organic structure directing agent while retaining the ordered silanol structure in the molecular sieve, realizing the efficient separation of propane/propylene, and revealing the separation mechanism of the ordered silanol and the unique elliptical eight-membered ring orifice on propane/propylene from the structural point of view.
